Manga vs Anime vs Visual Novel vs Game vs OVA
Generally, the manga or OVA has a different timeline of events than the Anime or the Game, or the Visual Novel, etc. There are details that are usually different. This is a good thing. Because we let you choose the particular timeline you follow for yourself, it often leads to a little confusion.
The explanation is simple: Time is not linear, therefore when all the worlds collided, characters were conglomerated from different Canon Universes into one plane of existence. This treats the Manga, Anime, and OVA of a series as 3 alternate universes.
If a character is exceptionally different in one adaption from another, we will let two members have the same character (provided one is from each adaption). Examples being Pride and Wrath between Brotherhood and the regular Anime, or Ash and Red from Pokemon.
Beginning vs Middle vs End of Series
Now that you've decided what Timeline to use, what point in the timeline should you take your character from? It doesn't matter. A character from the middle of the series timeline can easily still interact with his/her best friend from the end of the series, or 3 arcs later, etc.
Also, was the character supposed to be dead? You can take him/her after the "death" by saying that is when they were tossed from world to the other.
As before, these discrepancies are explained by the universe fact that "Time is Not Linear". Not only were characters taken from different worlds/timelines, they were taken from different points in time as well.
Generally speaking, you may be lacking in a couple of abilities but now you know what direction to go with developing the character into getting them again.
